The tour takes you to the very romantic Duino Castle, to the ‘flat-lands’ of the Region north-west of Trieste with the holiday paradise Grado and it’s lagoon. You will also visit two sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Aquileia and Palmanova. Wine-tasting in one of Italy’s “borghi storici”.
From the beautiful Bay of Sistiana parts, the panoramic cliff walk known as the Rilke Path, dear to the famous poet Rainer Maria Rilke, a regular guest at the Duino Castle. The 1,7 km walk overlooks the turquoise sea.
Perched on a rock high above the Gulf of Trieste, Duino Castle is the private residence of the Torre e Tasso Princes, which is the Italian part of the Thurn und Taxis family. From its clifftop location, surrounded by beautiful gardens, it overlooks a small fishing village. The exhibition in the Castle of family correspondence with many of the Royal European families with whom the princes had family ties, is interesting.
From the ‘hilly’ Duino, we move on to the flatlands beach and lagoon landscape stretching from Monfalcone to Venice. Grado is a well-known beach resort and medieval fishing village, on the seafront of its large lagoon. In the old town is the St. Eufemia Basilica dating back to 579. Grado holds the Italian record of having received 31 times the Blue Banner for clean beaches.

Across the lagoon is Aquileia. In the 3rd century, it had 300.000 inhabitants and was one of the major Roman cities. All the wine of the Roman soldiers was produced here. In the Santa Maria Assunta Basilica is the biggest preserved Roman mosaics. A short walk to the old port. Aquileia is liste in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It was destroyed by Attila and his troops.
Palmanova looks like a snowflake seen from above. It is a fortified city that was much strengthened by Napoleon. Also listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Nearby is the romantic medieval village of Clauiano. Wine tasting at a prizewinning, charming producer.
Transport to Piazza Unità in Trieste where the tour ends.
