The tour will take you to Mittel-Europa with Trieste, Udine, Ljubljana, Bled, Zagreb, Istria; 7 days accompanied by your "local friend" from Be As A Local.
Trieste, under the Habsburg Dynasty from 1382 to 1918, was one of the key cities of the Austrian Hungarian empire, as it's imperial port. It's beautiful palaces and squares at the sea, historic cafés and promenades will impress you. It is the center of the Giulia area.
Udine, nearby, is the main city of Julia area. A compact, lively center, demonstrating how it grew differently through the history, as a city under the Republic of Venice.
Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia. A very romantic city, with it's old center along the curving river, overlooked by the hill-top castle. It is becoming a very popular week-end trip destination in Europe.
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. The picturesque old Upper Town should be experienced in the evening with its dim lightning: it is the only city in the world still having street gas lanterns which are lighted each day manually.
The Istria peninsula contains many important sights, from Opatija that was 'the Monte Carlo' for the aristocrats at the start of the 20th century, Pula with its big roman theater, Rovigno not without reason being the top tourist destination of Croatia, and the crystal clear sea, fresh fish, wine and truffles.
The tour starts and ends in Trieste, on Wednesday and Tuesday the week after. Recommended airport is Trieste Airport, well served by Alitalia from Rome and Lufthansa from Munich, Frankfort, Cologne. Alternatively, fly to Venice, Treviso or Ljubljana.
Your local friend from Be As A Local will follow the group throughout the tour. The tour exists in two versions, one defined departure dates were the group is composed of you and other individuals or small groups, where we have decided on the hotels, or if you are some more people we can make a proposal for the period you prefer and where your group decides on how many stars the hotels should have.
We reserve the right to cancel the tour on a fixed date if the significant number of participants is not reached.

Guided tour in Trieste. The guide will tell you the story of how Trieste, having been made a free port by the Austrian Emperor, which it still is, grew into a multi-ethnic dynamic city. Trieste is Italy’s most cosmopolitan city today. You will visit the historic cafés and have lunch in a buffet restaurant that the New York Times found it worth to write a page about. And a tasting of the typical local and mid-European cakes. In the afternoon, visit to the Miramare Castle, built by the brother of the Emperor, prior to him becoming king of Mexico. On the way to Udine, we will visit Palmanova, the UNESCO site medieval fortress that looks from above like a snow crystal, and the Aquileia which used to be the 3rd most important Roman city. Also a UNESCO site, it's basilica hosts the biggest preserved Roman mosaics. Dinner in the hotel in Udine.
Guided tour in Udine. You will see some of the masterpieces of Tiepolo the great painter, in the cathedral and the Palazzo Patriarcale. We will tell you about the significant difference in behavior between the Friuli (Udine) people and the Giulia (Trieste) people. Lunch in the city centre. Transfer to Ljubljana through the Vipacca valley. Stop by the Postumia cave. Evening walk in the centre of Ljubljana. Dinner in the hotel.
Guided tour in Ljubljana. Departure to the lake of Bled, containing the only island of Slovenia. Lunch. Departure for and a guided tour in Zagreb. Dinner in the old town. Overnight stay.
Heading back to the sea, you will see Opatija which was the Saint Tropez of Europe towards the end of the 19th century. We continue towards Pula where you see the well preserved roman theatre. Nearby Rovigno is the number one of the tourist attractions in Croatia. Guided walk.
We will visit Porec (3rd tourist destination in Croatia) and the UNESCO site early Byzantine Euphrasius Basilica with its mosaic. Further north, in Slovenia, we will stop in Portoroz and its salt producing ponds, and Pirano the fascinating old Venezian fisherman village, before your last night in Trieste. Dinner in the hotel in Trieste.
Time to say “Ciao! A la prossima!” to Trieste. Transfer to the airport.
Bookings will be accepted until all available places are filled. They will be considered valid only if confirmation is followed immediately by an advance payment of 50% of the total cost of the holiday. The balance must be paid no later than 15 days before the starting date of the holiday.
Since we don't know to which airports that the tour participants will arrive to and therefore the related transfer cost, airport transfers are not included in the fixed tour price, Be As A Local will upon travel information from each traveler, book the transfer service that should be paid with a credit card in the minivan. You may choose whether to be alone in the minivan, or to share it with other passengers (cheaper).
Should you want to extend your visit, for example to arrive the day before the tour starts, or remain some time after the tour, Be As A Local would be happy to provide you with accommodation. You may then also benefit from the day excursion, cooking class, painting class and other offers that we have.
